National Famine Commeration Day (May 17th 2025)

Freitag, 16 Mai 2025 - Samstag, 17 Mai 2025
11:00PM - 10:59PM
No other event in our history can be likened to the Great Famine, either for its immediate, tragic impact, or its legacy of emigration, cultural loss and decline of the Irish language. The population of Ireland, which was close to 8.5 million in 1845, fell to 6.6 million by 1851.

Every year, thousands of people attend both the National and International Famine Commemorations which takes place this year in Kilmallock on Sunday 17th 2025 , to remember the many who died and emigrated, and to reflect on the appalling events during this period.

The public ceremony, which will be broadcast on RTÉ News Now channel, will provide an opportunity for the people of Co. Limerick and the surrounding counties to honour the memory of those who perished or emigrated as a result of An Gorta Mór. The event will take place in Kilmallock Famine Memorial Park which is located within the historic Kilmallock Union Workhouse complex. This is the first time the State Commemoration has taken place in County Limerick. As in previous years, it will include military honours before culminating in a solemn wreath-laying ceremony in remembrance of all those who suffered or perished due to the Irish Famine.

"The Kilmallock Famine Memorial Park, the site for this year’s National Famine Commemoration, is built on the very burial ground where famine victims were laid to rest in mass graves." "It is believed that many are interred here, and the site stands as a testament to the loss, suffering, and endurance of this community. By choosing Kilmallock, we honour the memory of those who perished here, and reaffirm our commitment to ensuring their story is never forgotten."
